Mornings

I must say I love mornings. For the light, the possibilities of the day ahead...
Take a look at my new favorite video. I think it will definitely improve your morning and hopefully your day, and maybe inspire you to sign up for a tap dancing class :)

Get your ticket! Sewing Seeds presents STAINED, an event of sensorial experiences through natural dyes.

So excited for this event. I hope you can make it!  STAINED was created by artist Cara Piazza as an unique experience for the public to engage with natural dyes through the lens of experimentation, ritual and performance. The event will challenge and delight the senses, inviting guests to participate with different “sensorial stations,”all interacting in unique ways with natural dyes.

An opulent table featuring ceramic works by Daniela Jacobs and Betty Roytburd, hanging net installation and table linens created by Cat Lauigan of Cave Collective and local delicacies curated by chef and artist Nicole Asselin, that will also function as dyes and stains.

A tapestry will be suspended along side ritualistic vessels conceived by Alex Wolkowicz of Cave Collective, that guests can use to splash, bang and imprint their imaginations on to it.

A tent will be erected, where guests will play with scent and sound, with scents provided and conjured up by Natural Apothecary and beauty guru Jessa Blades and sounds mixed by Cat Lauigan of Cave Collective.

Each station will combine all the elements of the human senses of sight, taste, touch, hearing and smell and abstract them to wholly immerse you into the world of natural dyeing.

Join us for a night of celebration of art and natural dyes,  local food + cocktails,  and unique experiences.
May 22nd,  7-11PM
The Dumbo Loft (155 Water Street, Brooklyn)

Ticket includes access to event and performances and open bar from 7-11PM generously provided by Van Brunt Stillhouse and Sixpoint Brewery.  Dancing provided by DJ Ayres from THE RUB.

Learning from Ina May

post by Odile Schalit, friend, social worker, and doula-

I had no idea the world that would be revealed to me when my Doula Mentor handed me "Spiritual Midwifery" some 5 or so years ago. Ina May Gaskin's name was but one I'd overheard in the circles I was, at the time, trying to "infiltrate." I imagined her as some sort of mystical birthing goddess. As it turned out, I wasn't too far off.

Spiritual Midwifery, her first book, which came out in 1977, speaks to Ina May's beginnings and work as a self-made Midwife on route to and eventually on the commune, called The Farm, that she and her husband founded. Since then, Ina May has established a renowned Midwifery Clinic on the Farm, written four books on topics related to birthing/breast feeding, written several articles, lectured around the world and appeared in documentaries - most recently,  Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives (trailer below).

Among many things, Ina May is clearly a pioneer for the natural birth movement but it is a subtler point that weaves its way through her work and her speaking that feels to me not only the most poetic but the most profound. Ina May speaks passionately about the reconnection of a woman with her body in its most natural and animalistic sense. The idea being that to start listening to our bodies again, to trust our bodies and their wisdom and fears, will provide for a more empowered experience in life and in birth. This sentiment and her expression of this (for example, through her quirky but brilliant "sphincter law" description which is accompanied on occasion by videos of monkeys) has been universally helpful for me as a Social Worker and Doula and can be to any woman regardless of the type of birth experience she seeks.

Catfish Man of the Woods

Have you ever heard of Catfish? I certainly hadn't until recently. The herbalist Phyllis Light mentioned his name during a class I was in this past summer at The International Herb Symposium. The class was all about Appalachian herbalism and Phyllis shared her stories about her teachers and the philosophy of herbalism and healing in Appalachia. She mentioned Catfish and I immediately feel in love with this man and have since been looking for as much information as I can find about him.

Catfish Grey was born in 1917 and was a fifth generation "herb doctor." Catfish collected all of the herbs he used, mostly in the woods near his home and was regarded by many as a master of plant lore. He got his start with herbs after a work place accident in the early 1950s that left him unable to perform physical labor. Gray gathered and sold wildflowers for money, turning to the great knowledge of woodland plants he had acquired from his family. Soon he was gathering herbs as well, and dispensing advice on using them to cure or prevent diseases. Gray gathered dozens of herbs, sorted, combined, and packaged them in a one-room building at his home near Glenwood, West Virginia, and mailed bags of his herbs and blends—usually for less than a dollar—to customers around the world. Gray dispensed his herbal cures along with advice about diet, religion, lifestyle, and the astrological aspects of illness. Gray also sold his herbs at craft fairs and other public gatherings, where his cheerful and sincere manner added to his reputation.
I hope you enjoy learning about Catfish as much as I do. And if you find any other information or resources, be sure to send them my way.

How do you see yourself? As beautiful?

I gotta hand it to Dove- this video provides and interesting window into how we see ourselves and has sparked a lively conversation over the internet. It is a really interesting social experiment exploring the way women see themselves vs. the way others see us. Check it out and let me know what you think.

p.s. I think you are all beautiful :)

Fashion Week

I cannot believe that Summer is over and Fashion Week is here. I'm looking to the movie Indian Summer (watch it free on Hulu) for my inspiration of what to wear this week. Have you guys seen that movie recently?
Its from '93...Bill Paxton with long hair... Diane Lane with long hair.... muscle tees, tribal prints... I'm in love.

In addition to watching movies from the '90's I'll also be getting inspired by the other fashions on the runway. Looking at clothes for Spring/Summer 2012 is helping to ease the pain of the end of Summer 2011.
Speaking of clothes...

I was able to collaborate with an incredible NYC based designer Caron Callahan for her Spring/Summer 2012 fashion presentation, doing the makeup to complement her beautiful designs.
Here is a sneak peek... Stay tuned for more pics and behind the scenes coverage of the show.

The Green Fashion Show at Boston College

Last week I went up to Boston College for their sustainable fashion show. The students created the most amazing clothes, using everything from trash bags to gum wrappers. I was honored that they asked me to come up and educate the students about safer products as well as how to do makeup for the runway. We were so lucky to have the most amazing eco, non-toxic tools and products to work with- W3LL PEOPLE, Jane Iredale and EcoTools

Check out my interview (complete with lots of giggles and my loud voice in the background) with my expert makeup artists- Katie and Lauren. These two rockstars had just completed doing the makeup for around 25 student models. I am so proud of these two for working so hard and picking up the tricks of runway makeup in record time.

Pink Skies Movie Trailer

"Pink Skies" Official Trailer from Pink Skies on Vimeo.

Watching this trailer for Pink Skies brought tears to my eyes. It is an inspirational documentary about the empowerment of women. It’s about overcoming obstacles as athletes & as human beings. We need to talk about how to PREVENT cancer, so we don't need to worry about curing it. http://www.pinkskiesthemovie.com/

The Burning Times

I've just finished watching this amazing six part documentary The Burning Times (you can watch the whole series on youtube). "The film is an in-depth look at the witch-hunts that swept through Europe just a few hundred years ago. False accusations and trials led to massive torture and burnings at the stake, and ultimately to the destruction of an organic way of life. The film advances the theory that widespread violence against women and the neglect of our environment today can be traced back to those times. Part two of a series of three films on women and spirituality, which includes Goddess Remembered and Full Circle."

It is really hard to believe that the inquisition burned 9 million witches during a period of 300 years. Take some time and learn more about what happened to the women of our past.

The No-Makeup Challenge: The Results Are In!

The lovely ladies over at No More Dirty Looks challenged us to a No-Makeup Challenge- to go without makeup for a day. This one day challenge was inspired by Rabbit Write’s No-Makeup Week.
Forty four of us sent over our photos- see them all posted here. Some may find this type of challenge tough but this is my kind of activity. Even though I work with makeup and beauty products for a living- I welcome any chance to give my face a break from products and let my skin breathe. I'm happy to be number thirty four!

The Story of Cosmetics

So excited to share this video! See more information about it HERE

Also thrilled that I was able to co-host the world premiere of the video last week at The Spotted Pig restaurant. It was a really beautiful night, we watched the video while sipping cocktails and eating yummy snacks and veggies from A Moveable Garden. The brilliant Mia Davis from The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics came in from Boston to host the event as well. And our other sponsor, co-host was the new and amazing skin care line Tata Harper. The event was so crowded that we had to show the video two times! That was sort-of my dream for the night, that people would be lining up to watch a video about toxins in our personal care.
The event was a huge success and I'm so glad were able to put together such a fabulous welcome for such an important video.

Coming Soon! The Story of Cosmetics

I'm sooooo excited about this new video coming out next week!
It is a short, hard-hitting video about toxic chemicals in cosmetics and their impact on our health.

The Story of Cosmetics, a 7-minute film from the good people at The Story of Stuff Project, Free Range Studios and (of course) the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, launches July 21.

Share away!

3 Bets by Sandra Steingraber

Please take a moment to read, I promise it will be worth your time... this is important for everyone, new parents, economists, teenagers, humans in general.
Sandra Steingraber is an ecologist, author, cancer survivor, and internationally recognized expert on the environmental links to cancer and reproductive health.
by Sandra Steingraber

Here is an excerpt:
"In umbilical cord blood alone, 287 different chemicals have been identified, including pesticides, stain removers, wood preservatives, mercury, and flame retardants. Our current environmental regulatory apparatus does not take into account the timing of exposure. And yet the science clearly shows that toxic exposures during key moments of infant and child development—especially during the opera of embryonic development—raise risks for harm in ways that are not predictable by dose. Benzo[a]pyrene, an ingredient in tobacco smoke, diesel exhaust, and soot, can damage eggs in the ovaries. Exposure to pesticides in men can reduce sperm count. Thus, our environmental policies may be eroding our fertility. And if a pregnancy is achieved, exposure to certain chemicals raises the risk that it will be lost through miscarriage, or what we in the scientific community call spontaneous abortion. Evidence suggests that the pesticide methoxchlor has this power, as do certain chemical solvents..."
