Who is your beauty inspiration? My answer is simply real women. Everyday I meet another woman who is inspiring and luminous. Women who are passionate, have their own sense of style, who love themselves... this is something that you can actually see radiate and I find this "glow" very inspiring. Most recently I've been inspired and motivated by a teacher of mine, herbalist healer and elder Rosemary Gladstar. She blends cross-cultural herbal remedies and tradition with common sense advice about living a healthy life. Rosemary is in her 60's and full of energy, love, compassion, and just a ton of plain-old goodness.
What product/treatment/beauty indulgence do you spend the most on? I would probably have to say eating really high quality food. I believe that a healthy skin and beauty regimen starts within and I try to get all my vitamins and nutrients through my food. I definitely treat myself to a diet that is local and seasonal, which when you have my taste, can add up—but it is totally worth it! I also treat myself to massages which relax me, bring me back down to earth and are an essential part of my beauty indulgences.
What do you spend the least on? Body moisturizer. I just use high quality, organic oils, sweet almond or coconut all over my skin. I don't spend a lot on shampoo either—I find that the less I wash my hair the better. I use organic shampoo and to that I'll occasionally add in some apple cider vinegar and baking soda—to clarify, condition and clean. What does age mean to you? To me, aging feels exciting and it also means wisdom and patience. As I get older I'm thrilled and relieved to experience an overall feeling of calmness as I get to know myself better.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about skin/hair/nails/beauty this year? The most interesting thing that I have learned lately is about the deep connection that herbs and plant medicine have for our beauty and wellness. I've spent all summer studying herbs and while I have always known that plants are healing and an essential part of many skincare ingredients, I now have a much deeper understanding of how and when and why to use them. I've also learned to use less soap and wash less. We are simply not that dirty and all of the scrubbing and exfoliating is stripping our bodies of the necessary oils that we need to balance our skin back to heath.
What’s the one thing you do (not product-based) that you think affects your appearance more than anything else? Relaxing. I know it is annoying to hear that kind of advice, especially when you are really stressed. But stress is so dangerous to our body and our skin. I also try my best to make sure that I get enough sleep and drink plenty of water. Trying to stress-less is super hard, especially in this city, but at least being aware of how powerful it is helps me to avoid stress as much as possible.

Why naturals? Using natural, simple, healthy products is the logical direction for us all. Many of the formulations and ingredients are remedies and recipes that we have been using for centuries to heal and beatify. We simply got a bit off track with the boom of the enormous business of beauty and started to trust them instead of trusting ourselves. I love teaching about why coconut oil is healing or why to use calendula and why to drink nettles. It is time to take back the power from the big beauty companies and put it back in the hands of the people and the earth. We can re-learn how to listen to what our bodies need and how to use products and ingredients that are truly helpful—without all the toxins, preservatives, fragrances and hype from the marketing world about what we need or should have in our products. My mission is to share this exciting message about naturals and actually help heal and empower women (and men) to live their healthiest and best life.

It seems that healthy hair care is on everyone's mind these days.

The lovely ladies over at No More Dirty Looks gave us a Summer Hair Challenge. We were asked to leave our hair alone...."Some time in the next week, when you get up in the morning, shower, shampoo and condition your hair using nontoxic natural products, comb it when you get out of the shower, and that’s it. No leave-ins, no heat. Once it’s dry, send us a pic."

And to round it off, Tisha, from the style blog TISL, was on her own quest to find a healthy shampoo that works. We got to talking about hair care, why and how shampoo works... and how to find the perfect shampoo for you. from TISL...

"Jessa Blades, a natural beauty expert and makeup artist based in NY is tired of sacrificing women’s health in the name of beauty. “Our hair is way too clean. It's specifically the lathery-foam that takes our hair out of its balanced state,” she says. In essence, we wash our hair daily stripping its natural oils just to “try” to put it all back in by using a “moisturizing” shampoo. Funny. Sounds like a circle that can be avoided. Blades’ advice is to, “stop washing your hair as often. Try using a dry shampoo in between washings, and give your hair some time to balance itself out.”

I cannot believe that Summer is over and Fashion Week is here. I'm looking to the movie Indian Summer (watch it free on Hulu) for my inspiration of what to wear this week. Have you guys seen that movie recently?

Its from '93...Bill Paxton with long hair... Diane Lane with long hair.... muscle tees, tribal prints... I'm in love.

In addition to watching movies from the '90's I'll also be getting inspired by the other fashions on the runway. Looking at clothes for Spring/Summer 2012 is helping to ease the pain of the end of Summer 2011.

I was able to collaborate with an incredible NYC based designer Caron Callahan for her Spring/Summer 2012 fashion presentation, doing the makeup to complement her beautiful designs.

Let's chat about Placenta

Did you guys read "The Placenta Cookbook" article in NY Mag? I just finished it and my mind is full of questions and ideas regarding the topic. I love that NY Mag covered the story and I can only imagine the response the article has gotten them. I think the topic is fascinating. I'm curious to study how other cultures honor the placenta and their rituals surrounding birth. And the fact that other animals eat the placenta after birth is pretty interesting, we are, after all, animals (even though we spend much of our time disconnecting from that identity).

If eating your placenta after birth can help with alleviating postpartum depression, aid in breast milk production and lactation, act as a uterine tonic, and replenish nutrients lost during pregnancy... I'm in.

HOW-TO: Make Lavender and Rose Body Powder

Sweaty Summertime calls for all sorts of recipes and ideas to help you deal with the heat. I'm a big fan of powders, for hair and body. If you are looking for a fun project, consider making this super easy Body Powder-

Jessa's interview from Stylecaster.com: "This is one of my favorite recipes. This powder is a natural deodorizer because of its absorbent properties. Once you are done making it, you can put it in a spice shaker for sprinkling on the body or just apply it by hand. Have fun and be creative with powders; they can be scented any way you like, and they are so simple and inexpensive to make."

Shopping List:
1 cup white cosmetic grade clay
1-2 cups cornstarch (you can substitute with arrowroot powder)
3-5 drops of essential oils- my favorite is lavender
Lavender and Rose flowers (optional but they make it look really beautiful!)
1. In a large bowl, using a wire whisk or fork, mix the clay and cornstarch together.
2. Add essential oil (note: It will absorb quite a bit)
3. If you decide to add the herbs, finely grind the lavender and roses (or other herbs of your choice) to a fine powder. Sift. Then grind again. They must be as powdered as possible or they will give a gritty feeling to the powder. A coffee or seed and nut grinder will work fairly well (make sure the grinder is VERY clean or you will smell like coffee).
4. Cover the body powder with a porous cloth and let sit for several hours to dry. Package in a powder container, spice jar with a shaker top or a vintage glass bottle.

The 24th New England Women's Herbal Conference

In just a week I get to head up north to the Women's Herbal Conference. The conference features over 60 workshops for all levels of interest and experience. Workshops focus on women’s health, herbal crafts, medicine making, plant identification walks and many hands-on demonstrations.

HOW TO: Make a Plum and Peach Crisp

My favorite Summer desserts have always been crisps or cobblers, letting the ripe Summer fruit really shine through. Last night I made a Peach, Raspberry and Blueberry Crisp. I improvised the filling part but used the topping recipe from 101 Cookbooks. Everyone loved the end result and the topping came out crispy and moist and perfectly sweet. I had never used yogurt in a topping before but it was a success and I think I will be making this recipe again and again.

Shopping List:
Fruit:
1 pound ripe peaches
1 pound ripe plums
1/4 cup natural cane sugar (or brown sugar)
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoons arrowroot (or cornstarch)
a scant 1/2 teaspoon orange blossom water (opt)
Crisp:
3/4 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup white whole wheat flour (all-purpose flour)
1/2 cup natural cane sugar (or brown sugar)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
big pinch of salt
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup yogurt

Happy Summer everyone. It has been hot and sticky here in Brooklyn but I don't mind the heat, I used to live in the Caribbean. So when this time of year comes around I'm in a great mood and all I want to do is eat vegetables, swim and never wear shoes. I recently reconnected with an old friend from my days on the island of St. John (yes, we used to live there... and no, I don't know why I left). Nicole is a super talented photographer and I've spent most of the morning looking at her work and drooling on my computer. I thought I would share this recipe, as it is a timely one, as us folks on the East Coast are getting pumped up about our August diet that consists of only corn and tomatoes.

Face It: Healthy Beauty Event

In June I had the opportunity to head to Pittsburgh to be a part of an amazing event hosted by Women For A Healthy Environment. Hundreds of women gathered at the beautiful Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and together we talked about what is really going on with our personal care products and then had an opportunity to mingle and shop around for alternatives. Our panel discussion was hosted by Emmy-award winning correspondent, Tonia Caruso, and featured myself (Jessa Blades of Blades Natural Beauty), Betsy George from Duchess Marden, Vanessa Green from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics; and Michelle Naccarati-Chapkis, Executive Director of Women for a Healthy Environment.
After the panel the guests were able to meet and shop with local natural beauty vendors (As I am Naturals, Cherry Valley Organics, Simple Sugars Scrub, Third Day Luxury Soaps, and Una Biologicals) and participate in my makeup demonstrations. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect night surrounded by open and thoughtful women in the most BEAUTIFUL botanical garden. More videos and photos are on their way.

The Green Fashion Show at Boston College

Last week I went up to Boston College for their sustainable fashion show. The students created the most amazing clothes, using everything from trash bags to gum wrappers. I was honored that they asked me to come up and educate the students about safer products as well as how to do makeup for the runway. We were so lucky to have the most amazing eco, non-toxic tools and products to work with- W3LL PEOPLE, Jane Iredale and EcoTools

Check out my interview (complete with lots of giggles and my loud voice in the background) with my expert makeup artists- Katie and Lauren. These two rockstars had just completed doing the makeup for around 25 student models. I am so proud of these two for working so hard and picking up the tricks of runway makeup in record time.

Hot pink nail polish is always a good idea (just make sure the polish is non-toxic)

I find this nail polish controversy so interesting, especially as I am someone who is and forever will be obsessed with the color hot pink.

I love John Stewart's take on this "Toemageddon of 2011." My only wish is that J. Crew's Jenna Lyons would use a non-toxic nail polish instead. Let's keep the toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde (all known carcinogenic ingredients sometimes found in conventional polish) out of nail polish please.

Can Livia Firth Green Her Beauty Routine? I say yes!

When I tell people that I work with natural and organic products most people seem very curious but they always have the same questions: are the products hard to find? Do the products work? Do they last? And my answer is yes. I had the chance to sit down with the lovely Livia Firth and talk about what I use and how I came to switching over to healthy beauty products. "The Oscars are just days away and I'm still trying to figure out where I'll watch the show (three of my friends are hosting parties) and scrambling to see as many of the nominated movies as I can before Sunday. I always love watching the night unfold, all of the glamour and the fabulous outfits, and this year I'm particularly excited to see what the stunning Livia Firth (Best Actor nominee Colin Firth's wife) will be wearing. Livia is an expert in eco-fashion, runs an amazing sustainable shop in London called Eco-Age, and writes a column for Vogue.com UK about what she wears on the red carpet, appropriately called "The Green Carpet Challenge."

A couple of months ago I was able to sit down with Livia and chat about all things related to natural beauty, non-toxic makeup, and why making the switch to naturals is important. For many women, personal care is the last hurdle on their quest to live healthier lives; after they have looked at what they are eating and wearing, women usually look next at what they are putting on their lips and cheeks. During our time together Livia shared many of the same concerns that most women have about making switch to naturals: Will the products look the same as what I'm used to? Will the makeup last? Where can you buy these new products?In her post for Vogue, Livia shares her red carpet beauty rituals and wonders if she is ready for a "Green Beauty Challenge." My vote is YES!"

Eye cream: Naturopathica Vitamin K Brightening Eye Serum.

Face: Toned Day Cream by Dr Hauskha or RMS Beauty Concealer and then apply bronzer by Couleur Caramel or Organic Glam Blusher from The Organic Pharmacy.

A very busy and overwhelming day was just made a whole lot better when I received this note from a client in regards to our recent natural beauty lesson.
"So, I was late coming to work this morning because I was having so much fun playing with my new makeup. Thank you so much for all your help Jessa!"

Trying on new colors and products (all non-toxic of course) in your bathroom before work- I can't think of a better reason to be late!

Oh lordy are my hands dry this time of year. I am constantly washing them on the job and trying my best to moisturize. And then there is always the dilemma with hand creams- they can either be too greasy and leave a film on your hands- or they aren't moisturizing enough and leave your hands wanting more protection. I always feel that I am on a search for the perfect hand cream.

The Dirty Thirty, as they are called, are a list of ingredients that I like to avoid when shopping for makeup, skincare, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant... you get the idea. These ingredients have been linked to cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities and more. They don't belong in our medicine cabinets or our makeup bags.

1. ALUMINUM ZIRCONIUM and OTHER ALUMINUM COMPOUNDS
Function: Used to control sweat and odor in the underarms by slowing down the production of sweat.
Present in: Antiperspirants. Banned by EU.
Health concerns: Linked to the development of Alzheimer’s Disease; may be linked to breast cancer; probable neurotoxin; possible nervous system, respiratory, and developmental toxin.
2.    BENZYL ACETATE

30. 1,4 DIOXANE
Function: Penetration enhancer
Present in: Body lotion, moisturizers, sunless tanning products, baby soap, anti-aging products..
Health concerns: EPA classifies it as a probable carcinogen found in 46 of 100 personal care products marketed as organic or natural, and the National Toxicology Program considers it a known animal carcinogen. Acute (short-term) inhalation exposure to high levels of 1,4 dioxane has caused vertigo, drowsiness, headache, anorexia and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs of humans. It may also irritate the skin.
This is a list of 30 chemical ingredients that may be linked to cancer. Many have been banned by the European Union on suspicion of their toxicity. What you may not know is that many of the biggest manufacturers of these products reformulate without these chemicals for the European market, but continue to manufacture with these potentially dangerous chemicals for the US market. Our hope is that you will use this list to help navigate your new purchases, and use your buying power to protect your right to health and a healthy world. This list was compiled by Teens Turning Green based on a survey of over 500 teens who named the products and brands they were using daily. In collaboration with a chemist, the ubiquitous chemicals were investigated for their potential harm to our health.

The Burning Times

I've just finished watching this amazing six part documentary The Burning Times (you can watch the whole series on youtube). "The film is an in-depth look at the witch-hunts that swept through Europe just a few hundred years ago. False accusations and trials led to massive torture and burnings at the stake, and ultimately to the destruction of an organic way of life. The film advances the theory that widespread violence against women and the neglect of our environment today can be traced back to those times. Part two of a series of three films on women and spirituality, which includes Goddess Remembered and Full Circle."

It is really hard to believe that the inquisition burned 9 million witches during a period of 300 years. Take some time and learn more about what happened to the women of our past.

An Evening at Stone Barns and Blue Hill

from Weleda.com: This summer I had the opportunity to visit Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture up the Hudson in Pocantico Hills, NY, to talk to the staff there about my work as an organic beauty consultant and makeup artist. Dan Barber, the visionary chef (and one of my heroes), asked me to come and speak to the farmers and chefs and share my knowledge about natural beauty. I'm so passionate about my work and my mission to educate and inspire folks to choose a more natural, healthier type of beauty routine, that being able to share with the staff at Blue Hill and Stone Barns was such an honor.

I got to take a stroll around the farm before we headed to the outdoor patio where the staff had assembled, eating their meal of fresh greens and pasta. First we heard from Jack Algiere, the farm manager, about what was coming into season and the importance of communication between the farmers and chefs. Then it was my turn. I told the staff about what I do, and then we engaged in a discussion about how the beauty industry is in desperate need of a makeover. Dan fired away with thought provoking questions, and the staff also chimed in, curious about what “organic” really means, whether sunscreen is toxic, which companies’ products are truly natural and how they can learn how to make sustainable choices.

I was thrilled to connect with everyone there; they are doing such great work educating and inspiring people about healthy food and sustainability. I like to think I do the same sort of thing, talking about our environment and sustainability through an interesting medium—mine is makeup and skin care and theirs is food. It was thrilling to be in the presence of such gastronomical rock stars. To finish I passed out Weleda treats of Skin Food and Almond Facial Oil. The staff was thrilled—everyone loved the samples.

Then for the part I had been waiting for: dinner! The next three hours were incredible. The chefs indulged us with fresh asparagus wrapped with prosciutto and sesame seeds, lemony watercress, purple potato gnocchi, apricot jam, smoked butter, fried smelt, fiddle head ferns, honey from the farm, tiny strawberries, goat’s milk yogurt and much, much more! I had the biggest smile on my face throughout the entire meal. Finally, for my final treat of the evening, we walked out of the restaurant to see the moon. It was bright orange, full, big and fat, and we could hear the newly born, baby lambs cooing in the distance.

Lately there has been some talk about why Cetaphil face cleanser should be avoided. I constantly hear people say that they have been washing their faces with it for years and are shocked when I tell them that they should consider trying something else.

Check out the recent post (with LOTS of comments) from WellandGood.com...
"Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser contains just eight ingredients: water, cetyl alcohol, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, stearyl alcohol, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben. All but the water are chemically manufactured (let’s hope), and propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, and the three parabens have a seat on the dirty dozen, a list of cosmetic ingredients to avoid as potentially toxic."

See folks- this "gentle" cleanser is not so gentle. You don't have to understand what these ingredients are or what they do- just understand enough to know that you should stop using it.

Here is my follow-up comment about my experience with Cetaphil-
"As a Cetaphil user for years I understand why people tend to freak out when they learn that it’s filled with some not-so-helpful ingredients. How can it be so bad if your dermatologist told you that it will help your skin? That it is so gentle, you don’t even need to use water to take it off! I used to think that there was something really wrong with my skin, I went to countless dermatologists looking for help. They claimed to understand my dry, sensitive skin and told me to use Cetaphil and Aquaphor. I believed that they were on my team, that these products would really help heal my skin. Well, let’s just say that the products didn’t help at all. I now know that my skin is totally normal BUT what it was sensitive to- were the irritants in those very products that the doctor was telling me to use.
So to all of those ladies (and men) who are skeptical about what folks are saying about Cetaphil- let me invite you to experiment- to stop using it- try one of the products that are recommended on the site- or even just try using raw/organic coconut oil to clean and moisturize your face…. I promise you, your skin will improve. My skin has changed 100% for the better since I stopped using Cetaphil and the other products that the dermatologist suggested."

How to defeat the melty, drippy feeling of unwanted shine?
“Use less cream-based moisture for one,” says Blades, who recommends stashing your face and eye creams in the fridge, along with a hydrosol mist. “Sometimes in summer your face almost feels swollen. Applying cool creams in the morning and spraying your face with a chilled hydrosol feels amazing.” It can help rein in the puffy feeling and help makeup sit, not slide, down your skin.

"After years of working in the cosmetics industry, makeup artist Jessa Blades grew sick of sacrificing women's health for the sake of beauty. She ditched toxic brands and formed Blades Natural Beauty in 2008, offering makeup services that use only natural and organic products. Blades also began working as an organic beauty consultant and has since emerged as one of the go-to experts in an eco-beauty movement that's long overdue.
Here Blades gives PAPER a heads-up on toxic cosmetics to steer clear of and some beauty tips for amping up your Spring/Summer look. And to prove that you can gussy up without using dangerous products, Blades demonstrates a few looks on the ladies of Brooklyn's melodic indie-pop trio Au Revoir Simone.
Let's talk spring cleaning. How often should makeup be replaced? What's the best way to clean your brushes?
Mascara should be replaced every three to five months -- and please -- don't share. Washing your brushes is really important -- the goal should be every week. All you need is a bit of gentle shampoo or hand soap. For an extra luscious makeup experience, every fourth time you wash your brushes, add a little conditioner after you shampoo them -- your brushes will feel amazing. Short on time? Bring your brushes into the shower and wash them in there. But please wash them! Your makeup will look better and it keeps nasty bacteria off of your face.
As we move into a new season, resolve to make small changes with your beauty routine. No need to throw everything away, just slowly incorporate more organic products into your life. Small changes will be better for your budget -- and a less abrupt change for your skin.
Winter weather conditions can be brutal on the skin -- especially the face. What are some ways to combat residual dry skin from January and February as we move into spring?
We hear it all the time, but drinking water and eating well are so important. In addition to nourishing your skin through food, I recommend eating omega supplements and adding more nuts and seeds to your diet.
Another tip (which I am trying to do myself) is to put a big glass of water by the bed and drink it first thing in the morning upon waking. This helps hydrate the skin and body right away – too many of us jumpstart our day with caffeine which only increases dehydration.
Using organic oils is also a great way to combat winter skin. Contrary to what most people think, oils do not clog pores – they’re an amazing way to hydrate and protect your skin. Organic argan oil, almond oil, and jojoba oil are great moisturizers -- but avoid mineral oil because that will clog your pores... read the whole story here.

I know it is 2010 and believe me, I am ready for it. I'm moving full steam ahead and so excited for the new year and all of the adventures on the horizon. But, before too much more times passes, I wanted to make sure to share one amazing night from last year.

My friends, Hollister Hovey (genius design blogger) and Porter Hovey (brilliant photographer) are incredibly talented creatures and put together a Frontier themed Holiday Party.

Some of the highlights were:

“I wasn’t eating food with chemicals, but here I was putting them all over the faces of women. I decided I didn’t want anything to do with that,” says Jessa Blades, one of a small new crop of green makeup artists working the editorial and wedding scene in New York City.
Although she went to North America’s top makeup school and worked for glamorous MAC cosmetics, Blades now carries in her kit green giants like Jane Iredale and Dr. Hauschka. And she’s a divining rod for emerging eco-friendly boutique brands, like RMS Beauty, MOD Skin, and Couleur Caramel, a collective category that there’s still no aisle for at Sephora. (Although she lists a dozen or so on her website.)
So how does makeup without the dirty dozen ingredients measure up? “One thing I hear from women is green makeup doesn’t last,” says Blades. “Well, nothing lasts. Breakfast doesn’t last all day. We just eat again. Likewise, lipstick needs to be reapplied. Should we load it with chemicals that dry out lips instead of doing a touch up?” The color selection nearly matches traditional makeup now, and many eco-friendly formulations include ingredients that are nourishing for skin, adds Blades.
What’s refreshing about Blades is that she’s a thinking woman’s green makeup artist, not an absolutist. Especially when it comes to special events. “It’s really okay to use waterproof mascara at a wedding,” she says. Particularly yours.
The takeaway? “The goal is to watch our exposure to toxins to avoid a build-up over time. Not to be all or nothing.”

Thus, our environmental policies may be eroding our fertility. And if a pregnancy is achieved, exposure to certain chemicals raises the risk that it will be lost through miscarriage, or what we in the scientific community call spontaneous abortion. Evidence suggests that the pesticide methoxchlor has this power, as do certain chemical solvents..."

Ease into Fall with an Aromatherapy Foot Soak from Katinka

So, I'm not really into this whole Summer-season being over, I want more beach, more picnics, more swimming. Fall is also slightly depressing because it means wearing shoes, no more flip flops. The topic of this post was inspired by my brilliant friend Katinka and my need to clean up my "summer feet" (I am notorious for running around barefoot), so I thought I would include a luxurious recipe for a foot soak to help transition us into fall.

Directions for the Foot soak:

1. Prepare a quiet place where you can sit for 10-20min. Place a towel or mat on the floor for the foot basin and have one handy for drying off your feet.

2. Fill the basin with warm to medium hot water.

3. Add 1/2 cup of Epsom salt to a tub of warm water. For particularly tired feet try 1 cup. You can add 3-5 drops of therapeutic grade essential oils to bath. I love to add dried herbs (rosemary is wonderful!) or flower petals such as roses, lavender and marigolds to the water. See recipes below.

4. Soak feet for as long as it feels right or until the water cools. Dry off and gently massage. You may want to use a lotion or oil.

Items Needed

Epsom Salts

Basin

Towel

Flower petals or oils (optional)

Feet!

Nurturing Foot Soak

½ c Epsom Salt

½ c Aluminum Free Baking Soda

Handful dried lavender buds

Handful rose petals (fresh or dried)

Cold Care Foot Soak

1 c Espsom Salt

5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

5 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Handful dried rosemary

Our feet contain maps for our whole bodies. Each foot has over 7000 nerve endings that connect to a different area of the body. Certain zones on the feet correspond to zones in the body- for example the long arch of the foot corresponds to the spine and the big toe to the neck and head. Take some time to look at your foot, does it mirror any places in the body?

There are channels of energy coursing through the body; each organ and muscle is connected by a network of nerves to a tiny point on the foot where the energy terminates. When circulation in the feet slows down—through illness, wearing shoes, or lack of exercise—crystalline deposits form at the nerve endings. This is why rubbing our feet feels good- it helps breakdown the buildup that cause soreness and tenderness. Soaking the feet in warm salty water also dissolves the lactic acid crystals and encouraged the whole body to keep circulating energy.

Ten percent of the body’s lymph is in the hands and feet. The lymph pulses through our bodies once every 30sec. During a 20min foot soak your lymph will cycle through your feet 40times. Epsom salts are made from Magnesium Sulfide. When magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin, such as  in a bath, it draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous  system, reduces swelling, relaxes muscles, is a natural  emollient, exfoliator, and much more. Next time you feel a cold coming on or have had a long day and need a treat- try a 20min foot bath and see for yourself how it effects you!

Jessa Blades’s Tips for Using These One-of-a-Kind Cosmetics

Terri Bly from Nature of Beauty posted a great piece about us today on Feelgood Style about how to use the new line of makeup by rms beauty.

Moments after sitting down in Rose Marie Swift’s very hip Manhattan loft, she surveyed my face, declared my blush was in need of an update, deftly pulled out one of her new lip2cheek stains, and within seconds I was sporting a healthy, rosy glow that looked natural and, if I do say so myself, quite lovely. By the time I left 60 delightful minutes later, Ms. Swift had given my eyes and lips similar transformations, and I strutted through Union Square looking and feeling like I had just received a makeover by one of America’s top makeup artists.

When the products arrived at my shop in St. Paul, however, I stared at them a bit helplessly and wondered just how I, a mere clinical-pschologist-turned-business-owner, could possibly recreate that same look with these cream-based blushes and shadows that were so different from the pressed powder variety I had used my whole life.

So I called Jessa Blades, a Manhattan-based makeup artist who worked alongside Rose Marie during Fashion Week and uses only natural cosmetics on her clientele (you can read all about Jessa here). She graciously offered some invaluable tips for getting the most out of rms beauty’s truly stunning color collection.

Blades’ favorite lip2cheek shades are Rapture and Illusive. “The rapture brings life to every color lip, especially for women over 40 who are losing color in their lips. It evens out the lip area, and brings life back to it. That’s what Rose Marie’s products do; they give life to the skin, making it look healthy and alive, which is really the essence of makeup, helping you look like you do on your healthier, most hydrated day”.

To apply Lip2Cheek to the lips, Blades suggests applying a small amount of rms lip balm first to moisten the lips. Then, using the ring finger, tap a small amount of the product onto the lips, blotting once or twice and applying another light layer of balm, rms Living Luminizer, or a light gloss on top if you want a bit of extra sheen.

As a blush, Blades emphasizes that “the big key [with using lip2cheek] is to make sure your skin is pretty hydrated. I will even throw on some rms balm first since my skin is always dry.” After hydrating the skin and applying foundation (lip2cheek can also be used on bare skin), Blades recommends taking the smallest bit and putting it on the apples of the cheeks in a circular motion and then blending back toward the ear.

In case you haven’t taken a look at rms beauty’s cream eye shadows, do so now. They are the most stunning array of gorgeous, universally flattering cream shadows I have ever seen, and designed to create a sheer layer of rich, natural-looking color that enhances and brightens the eyes. Unlike other natural cream shadows, they are not sticky or hard to work with. These silky smooth shadows warm immediately to the touch and glide on easily and quickly. Blades’ preferred shade is Magnetic, “because in general that
color tends to look good on most people, and with blue eyes, it looks fantastic.”

Blades favorite product, however, is the Living Luminizer. “I don’t think there’s anything else like it on the market. The way it lays on the skin, on all skin types, it brightens and illuminates, but doesn’t leave any glitter, like all of the others I have tried.” She has found numerous uses for the one-of-a-kind luminizer, as a highlighter high up on the cheekbone, a little down the bridge of the nose, and when she’s looking particularly sleep-deprived, “I will take the tiniest bit and put on the inner corner of my eyes and it reflects light to give the look of being awake.”

Make Your Own Body Scrub Recipe

I'm thinking that spring is almost, really here... the tree outside my bedroom is blooming, the ice cream truck is back to its regular route, and the birds are chirping.
This means warmer temps, flips flops, and some gentle exfoliation. Here is a really simple recipe from the wonderful folks over at Feelgoodstyle.com for a "Skin-Sweet Sugar Body Scrub."

Ingredients

* 1 cup sugar (any kind will do, brown sugar doesn’t look quite as pretty as white, but it makes no difference to the exfoliating effect)
* 1/2 cup olive oil (don’t use your extra virgin for this, basic olive oil is just as good for your skin)
* A few drops of a scented oil (don’t use any phototropic oils, such as bergamot or any citrus oil, if you intend to use the scrub in your morning shower as such oils can react to sunlight to cause burns)
* 1 glass jar with a plastic screw-on lid.

Method

In a glass or china bowl, mix the sugar and olive oil. Don’t use a plastic bowl as your preferred essential oil may penetrate the plastic and give it a permanent odour. Choose an organic oil to fragrance your blend: lavender is soothing, as is chamomile, while ginger and ylang ylang add tropical notes. If you like woody fragrances try cedar or marjoram. For zingy morning freshness, choose peppermint, and if you have somewhat spotty skin, especially on your back, use tea-tree oil to help counteract oil and to provide an antibacterial treatment.

You can also add dried flower petals to the blend too, which looks fantastic: marigold gives spikes of orange to the mixture, while lavender adds pretty purple specks. This scrub works best in the shower: rub it all over dry skin, especially the legs, buttocks and upper arms, where winter can have wreaked havoc, and then rinse off. Dead skin cells are sloughed off and the remaining soft under-layer of skin is gently moisturised and scented.

Because the oil will lift and the sugar will settle after a while, use a pretty chopstick that fits inside the jar as a stirrer to reblend the scrub before you use it. The reason commercial scrubs don’t separate is the various emulsifiers and stabilisers that stop it happening, so simply stir the mixture and feel happy that you’re not putting unnecessary chemicals on your tender skin. Don’t use any scrub more than twice a week, as they can strip oils from the skin along with old skin cells.

1). Mod Skin Labs Samurai Scrub: With things like indoor heating and cold winds, winter leaves skin dehydrated. Exfoliation is so important. This scrub will slough off dry winter skin with its nice exfoliating action and leaves skin hydrated, not stripped of moisture. ($30)

2). 100% Pure Peach Pigmented Brightening Concealer: This is a great concealer and is the natural alternative to the YSL Touche Eclat concealer pen. It’s in an easy-to-apply (and sanitary) pen and is great to cover up spots. ($21)

3). Dr. Haushka Translucent Bronze Concentrate: When this first comes out of the pump you’ll think its much too dark, but I rub a bit together with my fingers and dab directly onto cheeks to give a sun-touched look. You can also mix this with a moisturizer to thin it out a bit or use one of my other favorite products, Dr. Hauschka Toned Day Cream which will give nice all-over sheer color. ($40)

4). 100% Pure Cranberry Glow Lip & Cheek Tint: This looks really dark in the package, but its very sheer when applied and provides the right amount of rosy flush to cheeks. Glide over lips instead of gloss or lipstick. Throw it in your bag and re-apply as necessary. ($15)

5). RMS Beauty Living Luminizer: I love this product! It melts easily into skin and provides instant illumination. I apply this on cheekbones, on eyelids (if I’m doing a really neutral look), under the brow, on the bridge of the nose, in the tear duct area to really light up the eyes or in special circumstances when my clients haven’t had enough sleep, I’ll mix this with RMS Beauty Un-cover concealer and apply under eyes to really wake them up. ($38)

Eco Sourcebook from Lucky Magazine

I like it when I see some content from a major mainstream magazine move toward a more eco/sustainable approach.
Today, while reading Kaight's Blog I noticed a brand new "ECO Sourcebook" from the folks over at Lucky Magazine.
They have their "comprehensive guide to the best earth-friendly sites for beauty, fashion, and home."

I'm into it- they are getting the word out, showing that there are alternatives to the mainstream... and at the same time, it must be confusing for them... their magazine is paid for by advertisements from the big-name beauty brands... but they still want to be on the cutting edge trend of the industry...

That being said, it is a step in a better direction, making healthy beauty more acceptable and more approachable for women.
So, thanks for the info Lucky... keep up the good work.

Skin Feeling Dry?

A couple of weeks ago the wonderful Danelle Brown posted a lovely little post about us on Eco Chick.
In honor of the snow storm happening outside tonight I thought I would re-post the piece.
It seems like spring is almost here but everyone I know is still experiencing some pretty severe "winter skin."

Aubrey Organics $16.28

These facial moisturizers come in 5 different varieties according to skin type. The products are available at a wide variety of stores and being that the company was founded in 1967, their heritage is respected within the industry. Lip & Skin Balm by makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift $30

Another one of Jessa’s favorite is this dual balm. You can use it on your lips, face or apply it around the eyes at night time. The balm hydrates and protects the skin with food grade, biologically active ingredients and comes in either-Simply Vanilla or Simply Cacao.

"When scientific concern about global warming made its way to center stage in recent years, the link between personal and environmental health came along with it. Soon enough, it seemed that a boardroom of deciders clapped their hands in glee that the concept of eco-consciousness came prepackaged with its own snappy branding, not to mention big potential for another kind of green — profit. Before you knew it, everything was GREEN! A reasonable question followed: If everything is green, is anything really green? After all, the word natural has been slapped on everything from Pinkberry frozen yogurt to 7Up.

Organic food was long ago taken from the farmers' market to the fluorescent superstore by the power of consumer demand. Now the grooming industry stands at this frontier. Yet as a general rule, people who are making tons of money — like cosmetic companies — don't deal well with change, and so the business of suds and sprays, which grosses about $100 billion annually in the United States alone, remains almost completely unregulated. (The FDA's focus is limited to a concern that cosmetics not be used as vectors for bioterrorism.) The "USDA Organic" label for food came about in 2002, and as of now, it's the strictest certification for organic grooming products. However, it's too difficult for most companies to reach the requirement that 95 percent of ingredients be organic, so many have generated their own less stringent, and rather confusing, seals of approval: Estée Lauder and L'Oréal are two of the companies behind the "Oasis Organic" certification, and Burt's Bees — which was bought by Clorox last year — is pushing a "Natural Products Association" stamp. Teens Turning Green has a plan to effectively help get lead in lipstick banned through policy change in the state of California. This past August, 20008, a piece of legislation at the state level to ban lead in lipstick lost by one vote in the California Assembly. The teen campaign members have heard that the bill will be introduced in January and want to ensure its passage. If a ban like this is passed, it will have national implications.
